DCMA 14-point assessment

6. High float

Incomplete activities with total float over 44 working days.

Default threshold
No more than 5% of incomplete activities
On the demo programme
Pass1.66% (6 of 362)

Definition

Very high float usually means missing successor logic rather than genuine slack. The limit is 44 working days, about two months, and can be changed in the analysis settings.

How the app counts it

  • Measured on incomplete activities that carry a float value. Completed work has no float in P6.

Thresholds, the counting basis and whether the check counts towards the score can all be changed. See settings.

Why it matters

An activity with months of float gets no attention until it suddenly matters. If the float is false, a delay to it can hit the finish without warning.

How to fix it in P6

  1. For each activity, ask what can't start until it finishes, and add that successor.
  2. Check for open ends first: high float and missing logic usually travel together.
  3. Insights lists high float caused by missing successors separately.
